Ce montant va permettre \u00e0 ZeaChem de r\u00e9aliser un pilote de production d&rsquo;\u00e9thanol selon un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 original. Le proc\u00e9d\u00e9 ZeaChem part de mati\u00e8re ligno-cellulosique qu&rsquo;il s\u00e9pare par hydrolyse de la cellulose et de l&rsquo;h\u00e9micellulose, en sucres, xylose (C5) et glucose (C6) d&rsquo;une part et en r\u00e9sidus ligneux solide d&rsquo;autre part. C&rsquo;est donc un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 bio qui au d\u00e9part, comme tous les autres proc\u00e9d\u00e9s de ce genre, n&rsquo;utilise que la moiti\u00e9 environ de la ressource de biomasse. Il proc\u00e8de ensuite \u00e0 une <u>transformation de ces sucres en acide ac\u00e9tique<\/u> par le Clostrodium thermoaceticum des thermites, proc\u00e9d\u00e9 qui ne g\u00e9n\u00e8re pas de CO2, contrairement \u00e0 la fermentation alcoolique. Puis l&rsquo;acide est est\u00e9rifi\u00e9 et enfin, l&rsquo;ac\u00e9tate est transform\u00e9 en alcool par hydrog\u00e9nation catalytique (hydrog\u00e9nolyse). Au lieu de r\u00e9pondre de la biomasse pour les centrales au charbon, la fausse bonne id\u00e9e arrive illico: du syngas d&rsquo;o\u00f9 on extraira l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne pour r\u00e9aliser la derni\u00e8re \u00e9tape.
