Son proc\u00e9d\u00e9 repose sur un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 original <u>d&rsquo;extraction de la cellulose par solvant<\/u>, ce qui simplifie par la suite la transformation enzymatique en sucres puis en alcools. D&rsquo;autres fractions d&rsquo;extraction conduisent \u00e0 divers d\u00e9riv\u00e9s chimiques comme le furfural (FIG.). La partie non extractible conduit \u00e0 un r\u00e9sidu solide de lignine qui peut \u00eatre valoris\u00e9 sous forme de panneaux de bois. C&rsquo;est donc un proc\u00e9d\u00e9 tr\u00e8s intelligent, d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par Kendall Pye, qui essaie de valoriser au mieux la ressource. Cette information ne prend d&rsquo;int\u00e9r\u00eat que lorsque le m\u00eame Mitsui annonce que l&rsquo;Hydrog\u00e8ne sera produit par photo\u00e9lectrocatalyse sur un film mince de TiO2 avec un rendement quantique de 60%. Cette unit\u00e9 devrait produire dans les 100 tonnes de m\u00e9thanol par an et elle sera op\u00e9rationnelle en 2010.
