Il peut \u00eatre produit \u00e0 partir de gaz naturel, dans ce cas ce pourrait \u00eatre un excellent sous-produit de petits ou moyens gisements de gaz naturel qui n&rsquo;ont pas la taille suffisante pour justifier \u00e9conomiquement la construction d&rsquo;une unit\u00e9 de liqu\u00e9faction ou d&rsquo;un gazoduc. Il peut \u00e9galement \u00eatre obtenu par une r\u00e9action de type Fischer-Tropsch \u00e0 partir de gaz de synth\u00e8se issu de l&rsquo;exploitation de la biomasse. Le constructeur de v\u00e9hicules Volvo va donc conduire des tests en vraie grandeur sur 14 camions, aliment\u00e9s au DME, qui vont sillonner les routes su\u00e9doises d\u00e8s 2009.
