C\u2019est peut \u00eatre une bonne id\u00e9e, en tout cas cela va dans le sens de la d\u00e9croissance. Dans le p\u00e9trole brut, il repr\u00e9sente les coupes les plus lourdes, celles dont les mol\u00e9cules d\u2019hydrocarbures sont compos\u00e9es de plus de 40 atomes de carbones. Afin d\u2019exploiter cette ressource, Mitsubishi a utilise les propri\u00e9t\u00e9s de l\u2019eau port\u00e9e a un \u00e9tat supercritique, c\u2019est a- dire a un point ou l\u2019eau agit comme un solvant hybride, combinant les caract\u00e9ristiques d\u2019un liquide et d\u2019un gaz (faible viscosit\u00e9, pas de tension superficielle&#8230;). Dans cet appareil, l\u2019eau est amen\u00e9e a 460.C et a 250 atmosph\u00e8res et, au contact de l\u2019asphalte, rompt les liaisons dans la cha\u00eene carbon\u00e9e, ce qui permet d\u2019obtenir des mol\u00e9cules plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res : essence (C6 a C10), gazole (C13 a C20)&#8230; Lors du retour \u00e0 une pression d\u2019une atmosph\u00e8re, l\u2019essence et les autres huiles se s\u00e9parent de l\u2019eau, ce qui permet de les r\u00e9cup\u00e9rer. Il est a noter que le propane et le butane portes a un \u00e9tat supercritique sont \u00e9galement utilises dans la r\u00e9cup\u00e9ration d\u2019huiles l\u00e9gers a partir d\u2019asphalte, mais que les proc\u00e8des sont assez lourds a mettre en oeuvre.
