Cette \u00e9tude a \u00e9t\u00e9 men\u00e9e de fa\u00e7on analytique&#160;\u00e0 partir d&#039;un d\u00e9coupage en zones de cette immense r\u00e9gion autour du Cercle Polaire, de l&#039;identification du type de sol et de caract\u00e9risation des nombreux types par des pr\u00e9l\u00e8vements. Cette \u00e9tude consid\u00e8re que le permafrost repr\u00e9sente une surface de <span>18,8 millions de km<\/span><sup>2<\/sup> soit 16% de la surface des sols dans le monde. Les tourbi\u00e8res les plus riches en carbone organique, occupent&#160;3,6 millions de km<sup>2<\/sup>, soit 20% de l&#039;aire du&#160;Permafrost.&#160;Les auteurs consid\u00e8rent que la quantit\u00e9 totale de carbone organique emprisonn\u00e9e dans ces sols totalement ou partiellement gel\u00e9s repr\u00e9sente dans les <span>1672 milliards de tonnes de carbone organique<\/span>, ce qui devrait repr\u00e9senter la moiti\u00e9 du carbone enfoui dans les sols, grossi\u00e8rement estim\u00e9 dans le monde aux environs de 3000 milliards de tonnes. Cette \u00e9norme quantit\u00e9 comprend plus de&#160;1000 milliards de tonnes de carbone enfoui jusqu&#039;\u00e0 trois m\u00e8tres de profondeur, le restant \u00e9tant enfoui plus profond\u00e9ment dans des estuaires par exemple.
