    Tom Gale joins Cerberus

    Tomgale
Tom Gale joins Cerberus advisory team. It’s a big news for Chrysler. Indeed Tom Gale is amongst the key men responsible for the Chrysler rebirth at the end of the eighties and in the nineties.

Born in Flint in 1943, he studied industrial design at Michigan State University before joining Chrysler in 1967, not as a designer but as an engineer. He built up his reputation when he was sent to Mitsubishi at the beginning at the eighties. There he designed the Mitsubishi 3000GT/Dodge Stealth and the Plymouth Laser/Eagel Talon/Mitsubishi Eclipse. In 1985, he took over from Don Delarossa as head of design. He persuaded Lee Lacocca to raise the status pf design at the same level of the other departments.

Under his leardership, Chrysler revealed astonishing concept cars such as the Portofino in 1987. Some of them were put into production such as the Viper in 1992, three years after making itas debut at a motorshow. The following year, the Prowler was revealed and put into production in 1997, but with less success.

Each year Detroit motor show became the Chrysler’s motorshow where it revealed Thunderbolt, Atlantic and Phaeton concept cars. Before retiring he persuaded Chrysler to choose a rear-wheel drive platform and to favor an appealing design for future 300C.

  • R-Class competitor from Volvo?

    R-Class competitor from Volvo?

    Vcc_2003

According to the Swedish car magazine Auto Motor Und Sport, Volvo is rumored to be working on a new luxury model positioned above the XC90 and S80 and possibly labelled the XC100. Expected to be a luxury
wagon, it would compete with the Mercedes R-Class on the American and Asian markets.

It is not the first time a luxury wagon has been mentioned: Volvo revealed the luxury VCC concept car at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show. 193" long, the concept car was as big as a Volvo S80 and provided a luxury atmosphere based on thick saddle-quality leather and anodised aluminium. Although inspired by the concept car, the future XC100 would be able to seat up to seven passengers. It could also be equipped with a hybrid drivetrain.

At a time when the R-Class is not selling well, Volvo’s approach is surprising. The XC, expected to be produced at a low volume, is unlikely to make a significant contribution to the carmaker’s sales target of 600,000 vehicles per year over the next few years.

Launched in April 2006, 11, 783 S80 were sold by December the same year. The first trimester of 2007 looks better with 11,788 sales and the annual target of 40,000 seems achievable. However, the C30 still needs to prove it can succeed in this highly competitive market segment.

For the XC100, 20,000 vehicles might be an ambitious target. Obviously the XC90’s success proves that Volvo has a strong brand image in the luxury wagon/SUV market. But the R-Class experience shows that
customers are not ready to buy just any vehicle based on a strong brand image alone. That is, unless Volvo has found the magic potion…

Mercedes consider launch of small roadster

    Sla_mercedes

Mercedes might launch a small roadster in 2011. The new toy would compete with the Mazda MX5 and potentially also the BMW Z2 and Lancia Fulvia. It is not the first time that such a project has been mentioned, but the technical choices made for the next A-Class are more favorable to a convertible body than in the past.

Indeed, the future small Mercedes will share components with the new C-Class: rear wheel drive and front engines. The next A-Class will also lose the patented “Sandwich“ floor. Apart from its high production cost, this particular floor does not allow Mercedes to extend the range as easily as BMW is able to with the 1-Series. Today a small roadster would require a specific platform, making it hard to break-even with a low production figure.

Mercedes revealed a concept car called SLA at the 2000 Detroit Motor Show. 148“ long, it took inspiration from the SLR roadster but with an astonishing bonnet and surprising front lights. The rear-end was more conventional with a luggage carrier. Inside the layout was minimalistic: a wheel, a gearstick and a few buttons. The SLA had a 1.9 litre engine with an modest output of 123 bhp.

    Spyshots: Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate

Cclassestate The website worldcarfans.com revealed a video of the next C-Class estate earlier today. It should appear officially at the Frankfurt motor show, six months after the sedan, as is the common practice for Mercedes.

Like its predecessor, the estate is expected to be fitted with the same type of engines used in the sedan but is likely to be sportier than the current model.

  • Toyota “Smart” at Frankfurt Motor Show

Toyota “Smart” at Frankfurt Motor Show

Toyotaendo1bbig Toyota will launch a new competitor on the microcar market next September. The new model, which is set to compete with the popular Smart car, will be available from 2008.

This announcement comes as no surprise. Two years ago at the same Motor Show, the Japanese carmaker revealed the concept car Endo and its production was oft-talked about in the press.  Though Smart chose to design a very small car for only two people, Toyota decided to be less radical. The Endo was 3m long and provided enough room for 4 people. Insiders revealed that the production model would offer 3+1 seats like the Fiat concept car of Geneva 2004, the Trepiùno.

In order to reduce the production costs, Smart was obliged to share the engine with Mitsubishi. Toyota could go it alone and reuse the 1 litre with an output of 68 bhp already used in the Aygo and Yaris. No diesel engine appears to be planned even though the Aygo is sold with a 1.4 litre engine.

  • Maybach: future plans

    Maybach: future plans

Maybachexelero21024x768 Maybach has lost the first round, but not the match. Though the 57/62 did not live up to its expections, the brand image exists and is well known around the world thanks to the Exelero and Jay-Z. The German super-luxury manufacturer is currently working on three projects according to an insider: an SUV based on the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, a 4-door coupe like the CLS but for the very wealthy and a 4-seat coupe like the impressive Exelero.

Maybach seems to have resigned itself to testing every possibility and an SUV is one of them. Its competitors have considered doing the same but gave up the idea due to their lack of presence on the SUV market. However, even though Maybach itself also currently has no presence on this market, its parent company, Mercedes-Benz has a long history with the G Class. Despite being almost 30 years old, the G-Class is still a favourite among wealthy buyers. The move to producing a Maybach SUV would seem to be a natural progression.

Considered as a transition model, it would be a windfall for the subsidiary. Built on the GL platform, it would be cheap to manufacture but sold at a high price. Obviously the GL would be modified. It would receive a Maybach grille, new bumpers and a revised rear-end. The interior would get top-grade leather, luxury wooden panels and rear lounge seats like those in the 57/62. The car would be sold outside Europe and only 1,500 would be made every year.

The second – and favourite – project is a smaller limousine that would compete with the baby Rolls. Both manufacturers would meet for round two. Maybach would like to take advantage of the Mercedes CLS-Class success to launch a luxury 4-door coupe. Dubbed super-CLS, the limousine would be based on the S-Class, but designers would not repeat the mistake they made with the 57/62, often known as the über S-Class. The smaller Maybach would have its own design and it is said that the car would include exterior lights to accentuate certain body contours. It would also reuse the 5.5-litre turbo V-12 from the S-Class. The car would be sold at a price of around £150,000.

The last project would be a production model of the flamboyant Exelero, the success of which impressed Maybach’s decision-makers. They gave the green light to product planners for a possible production model. However, no more information is currently available about this project, leaving market analysts guessing about the next move of this struggling carmaker.

  • Volvo S60: an illusion of change

Volvo S60: an illusion of change

S601 Have this ever happened to you? You’re going to a club, are ready to strut your stuff on the dance floor. You take a seat and are chatting with your friends when the ladies of the group want to go and powder their noses. You acquiesce and carry on discussing until their return makes you totally confused. Despite your expert eye, you perceive no changes and you still ask yourself the point of this female ritual.

What is the link with the refreshed Volvo S60? Well, the time required by girls for a discussion in front of the mirror is equivalent to the time taken by Volvo to refresh the Volvo S60 – and in both cases changes are impossible to discern.

Let’s be honest: we didn’t expect a revolution for a car that will disappear soon and is still a design success, but the ritual of restyling, when it is not, is irritating, especially since it has become popular among the carmakers. In the case of the S60, it has reached a peak. Indeed, the S60 gets a new grille with the new larger brand emblem, which appeared on the S80, and side indicators integrated in the door mirrors. However the sporty front spoiler is an option as is the new wing spoiler front spoiler,  the sills and rear lower bumper, colour coordinated with the car body. Thus a discussion with your friends could run as follows: “Hey, I have the refreshed Volvo S60, but since I couldn’t afford the refreshed trims, it’s indistinguishable from the old model.” The three new exterior colours – Electric Silver, Orinoco Blue and Maple Red and the three new aluminium wheels – Nodus (16 inches), Tucana (17 inches) and Eudora (18 inches) won’t change the feeling of deception. Scrutinizing the interior with a magnifying glass is not better because once again only optional extras will enable you to enjoy the new aluminium metal decor panels, the new three-spoke steering wheel, the new Volvo S80’s inspired instrument panel and the new interior mirror with built-in compass.

S608 This rejuvenation has some good features. The engineers have increased the car’s torsional rigidity by about 25 percent thanks to firmer shock absorbers and springs. They have also innovated and introduced an innovative a new indicator function: press lightly on the lever and the indicator flashes three times. Not a revolution, as you will conclude but Volvo is careful to call this a “refined S60” rather than a refreshed S60 in the hope that the public will confuse the two. To a degree, the fact that there is discussion about this at all is a success for the Swedish carmaker: keeping themselves in the public eye while we wait for the promised successor to the S60.

  • Renault goes to China

    Renault goes to China

RenaultlogoHaving a factory in China is an obligation if you want to be considered as serious by Chinese car dealers and customers. Renault currently sells four models — Scenic, Megane, Vel Satis and Laguna — in the Middle Kingdom but 740 vehicles found an owner last year. In the middle of last year, Renault teamed up with Dongfeng, which produces the old ZX, the Xsara, Picasso and the 307 in a joint venture with PSA.

The purpose of this joint-venture is to produce 300, 000 Logan per year but talks took longer than planned and Carlos Ghosn has clearly expressed the will to focus on core markets. This difficult situation for Renault, which won’t unveil any new model before 2007, could lead to them postponing the Chinese project. They might even cancel it.

This hypothesis, revealed by two insiders last week, has allowed a speeding up of the process. Four days after it was revealed in the press, the provincial government in Hubei province stated on its website that it would invest 60 billion yuan (US$7.43 billion) in new projects which should benefit the Dongfeng-Renault venture. No comments have been made by either Renault or Dongfeng but for a French carmaker, getting a foothold in China is not up for discussion. Renault is in a difficult situation but it doesn’t mean it must refuse all opportunities or stop projects, especially on the next biggest car market in the world.

  • Daihatsu Esse : forbidden for men

Daihatsu Esse : forbidden for men

Esse_blueUnveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, the new Esse from Daihatsu is being sold in Japan from today. Its name, an acronym for Economic, Simple, Smart and Easy summarizes the characteristics of this new kei-car. In Japan, kei-car is a particular segment which allows the owner to get some tax and insurance relief and most importantly an exemption from the usual requirement for a parking space certification.

Esse_cockpitSo, the Esse is 3.39 m long, 1.48 m wide and offers enough space for four tiny Japanese girls and their bags in the small boot. Daihatsu engineers have been very clever in designing a car with poor features which doesn’t feel like it, thanks to fresh colours as Renault did with the Twingo in 1992. The plastics and seats share the same colour as the exterior painting. Like the Twingo, the instrument panel is central but the dashboard is less nifty and closer to the layout we can find in any Japanese car.

In order to meet the regulations, the Esse is powered with a small 600 cc 3-cylinder engine with an output of 58 bhp at 7,200 rpm. Coupled with a CVT automatic gearbox, it is set to become the perfect choice for girls who don’t want to spend a lot on a car.
