Cadillac set out to conquer Australia

Holden chairman and managing director Chris Gubbey revealed during a media event that Cadillac will sell its new CTS in Australia at the end of 2008. The saloon will be the first Cadillac to be on sale there since the company left the country nearly forty years ago.

The range will be limited to the CTS saloon. One does not expect to see the estate variant to be sold also in Australia. The car will be available with the 300bhp 3.6-litre V6 engine at launch. Later the CTS will be offered with a 2.9-litre turbodiesel engine whose spec remains unknown. The two engines will associated with a six speed automatic gearbox.

    CTS coupé speculation

It was mentioned last year the possibility of further body styles for the CTS to broaden its appeal on the European market but also in the US. Indeed, all its main rivals feature estate and coupé models in their range. It is rumoured that Cadillac is preparing an estate and a coupé. The estate might be unveiled at the next Detroit Motor Show, but it is unknown whether the coupé has been given the green light.

Underneath, the CTS coupé will share its platform with the CTS saloon. Dubbed Sigma II, it is updated version of the current Sigma used by the slow selling SRX model. This platform is available with a choice of rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Like the saloon, the coupé would be powered by the 3.6-litre V6 with 259bhp or 300bhp. Both engines might be topped by the powerful 517bhp 7-litre V8 unit derived from the Corvette Z06. With such a power, the CTS coupé would enter the selective sports car market on which Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are king.

While the CTS will arrive soon in our showrooms, there is no information regarding the two other models. Cadillac might consider importing them in Europe if there is a demand for it.

    Spyshot: Cadillac BRX

Here is the first spyshot of the future Cadillac BRX. Eagerly awaited by the dealers to replace the slow selling SRX, the BRX will be a crossover, smaller than the current SRX. It will go on sale at the end of next year.

Despite being shot with a Saturn Vue, known as the Vauxhall Antara model in the UK, the BRX will not share its platform. The future Cadillac crossover will be based on the Theta Premium platform which is a combination of the current Theta platform and the future Epsilon 2 platform.

The BRX will be longer than the Vauxhall Antara (180 inches) but shorter than the SRX (195 inches). The future crossover will feature the Cadillac’s design vocabulary, characterized by sharp lines. It will be equipped with two V6 engines. The entry level will get a 2.8 liter petrol engine. The top of the range will be a 3.6 liter petrol engine. The new crossover will be available with front- and all-wheel drive layouts.

The BRX will probably never come to Europe. Nevertheless, the future Saab 9-4 X crossover will be based on the BRX. For the European continent, expect to see a diesel engine.
