Beijing 2008 Live : Chery Faira

2008_chery_faira_family_08 While most carmakers unveils a few models, Chey has unveiled a family of small vehicles: BB, NN, HH, JJ and YY.

The Faira family is Chery’s serious attempt to drown the small car market segment with a single platform and a single engine, but with a raft of variants as the Faira models will be powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine.

The BB is a small three-door hatchback roomy enough for two persons which will compete with the Great Wall Bubble and perhaps the Smart which will arrive in China next year.

The NN is small car available in three door and five door variants. This model offers similar dimensions to the Twingo’s.

The JJ is a SUV variant. One doesn’t expect this model to have off-road credentials. However, Mitsubishi sells the Mini-Pajero in Japan which as good mud abilities.

    Spyshots: Chery B13

Chery_b13 Here are the spyshots of the Chery MPV called B13 due to be unveiled next month at the Beijing Motor Show

Little by little, Chery is building a complete lineup. The B13 had been displayed as a concept car at the 2006 Beijing Motor Show. Since then, news remained scarce and observers believed the MPV was whisked off as it’s the tradition among Chinese carmakers.

Cheryb13 If the concept car featured rotating seats for the second row with table, the production version appears to be more conventional favouring roominess. However, the overall treatment is still heading for the top of the segment with leather upholstery and wood panels. The spotted B13 also featured a drop down DVD player from the roof.

Chery_02 Technically, the B13 will be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder petrol engine hooked up to a six speed automatic gearbox. The B13 is expected to go on sale from May.

    Spyshot: Chery A3 hatchback

A3testing The Chinese carmakers are getting serious about design. The future Chery A3 is one of the latest example.

Due to go on sale soon, the latest Chery, a compact model, features a design that has nothing to envy to established rivals at least at first glance. The design is modern and lines are sleek. Instead of launching a revamped ZX, Citroen should think at launching a real car on the Chinese market. However, Chery has a long path to follow before being able to offer an attractive package with a strong character like European carmakers do. Along with the hatchback, the carmaker will also launch the A3 saloon.

A3testing2 Under the bonnet, the A3 five-door will be available with a choice of 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines. The future car is expected to cost around £8,700 for the entry-level.

Chery, official providers of hybrid cars for the Olympic Games

    Chery_a5_h
The Chinese A5 hybrid saloon has been elected as the official car of the Olympic Games due to occur next summer.

The Chinese government wants to show it cares about the environment and put pressure on the domestic carmakers to develop hybrid cars. Unfortunately, the same carmakers are not really interested in hybrid technologies and have only expressed their good will in press statement. Choosing the A5 hybrid is a clear message that the authorities send them: build hybrid cars if you want to take part in the future of China.

The Chery A5 is powered by a 1.3-litre petrol engine associated to a hybrid solution whose details remain unknown. 80 cars will be provided to the Olympic organization and the cars will be christened “Olympics Green Messengers”.

Last year the Chinese carmaker built 380,000 cars and has set the ambitious plan to build half of its production with a hybrid solution at a time when Toyota changed its strategy on hybrid models.

Chery to replace the controversial QQ3

    Chery_qq2_1
Chery engineers are working hard to release this year the planned models: A6 CC convertible, A5 estate, the small QQ5. They still found time to replace the controversial QQ3. The future QQ2 is expected to be unveiled at the next Beijing Motor Show in April of this year.

    Chery_qq2_2
Aware of the bad brand image of Chinese cars generated by catastrophic crash tests, Chery focused on improving the safety of the future small car. The bonnet has been redesigned to take into account pedestrians. The QQ2 will offer a choice of three petrol engines, 1.0-litre, 1.1-litre and 1.2-litre.

There will also be a 1.0-litre diesel unit on the menu. The QQ2 will become the first Chinese passenger car to be powered by a diesel engine. Actually, Chery doesn’t exepct the oil burner unit to meet a big success in China, but look at the European shores. The Chinese carmaker plans to launch the QQ2 in Europe next year.
