1997 Chrysler Viper GT2 racecar returns to Le Mans

Chrysler Viper GTSR chassis C3 LM24 1997It's back to the track of its glory days. During the 24 Hours of Le Mans of 1997, this very Chrysler Viper (yes, it was a Chrysler in Europe and a Dodge in the USA), was the only works car that finished the famous race. Driven by Justin Bell (GB), Pierre Yver (France) and John Morton (USA), chassis number C3 was defending the MOPAR colors in La Sarthe. It has now found a spot in the Le Mans 24 Hours museum. However, it will not rest still, as it is scheduled to run again on the big track during the coming Le Mans Classic!

  • Next Chrysler 300 to keep current design

Next Chrysler 300 to keep current design

Ch008_002th The current 300 saloon will go down in history as the model which brought the company on the saloon market and push competition such as the Ford 500 into the background. However, its replacement might become a serious headache for Chrysler engineers and designers.

The American carmaker has decided to follow the German path that’s to say favoring evolutionary designs. With the next-generation 300, designers will slightly modernize the current overall design a bit like German carmakers did in the previous century. While the car’s exterior will remain similar to that of the current model, the interior styling will be a big improvement over the current 300. company execs are aware of the criticisms targeted at its models’ interior, so designer and engineers have been to told to focus on materials, fit and finish to match Asian models.

The next 300 will be launched in 2011 or 2012. Technical details remains unknown.

Alfa Romeo CEO confirms talks with Chrysler

070919_f_demeo_800 Firstly, rumour had mentioned that Fiat entered into talks with Chrysler over the possibility to produce Alfa Romeo models in the US. Then, Chrysler denied the allegations. In a third round, Luca de Meo confirms Fiat is discussing with the American carmaker about varied cooperations.

In an interview with the German newspaper WirtschaftsWoche, the CEO of the Italian marque has confirmed that there was talks between the two companies. De Meo also announced a potential production in Mexico.

Along with Alfa Romeo, Fiat is expected to build other models there such as the Fiat 500.  Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne has announced that the hot 500 will be sold on the American market by 2010. The carmaker has great hope with the small retro-car in the US which will spearhead a revival of the small Italian cars in the US. In addition to the 500, Fiat plans to launch two new small cars currently in development.

  • Chrysler wants to cut costs by 25%

Chrysler wants to cut costs by 25%

677009main_building Chrysler has announced it will reduce costs by 25 per cent over the next three years by changing the production process and improving the number shared pars between models.

Chrysler executives continue making significant changes to Chrysler. After the will to reduce the number of models, the carmaker has announced it will change its way of working with suppliers. First, it will reduce the number of parts in order to cut cost. It will also extend its production schedule from one week to thirty days allowing suppliers to plan production in a more efficient way than today. In the meantime, the carmaker asks suppliers located in North America to match prices of companies in low-cost countries such as China and India.

Every year, Chrysler is buying for £20 billion of supplies, mainly in the US. The carmaker believes that it will boost its chance of surviving on the global market if it outsources its parts production to poorer countries. However, the decision to move production abroad is always badly felt by consumers. In the meantime, outsourcing in China or India might become a disadvantage to react quickly to the market. By pressuring its American suppliers, Chrysler tries to get the best of the two worlds: cheap prices, while keeping a good brand image.

Chrysler kills rebadge of Dodge Journey to work on small car

2007_journey_10 As Petrol-Head reported in a previous post, Chryler is reshuffling its portfolio in an attempt to distinguish its brand from each other. The Dodge Journey won’t sport the Chrysler label.

After stopping the production of four models, the troubled Chrysler continues on modifying its plans in an attempt to cut cost. The Chrysler-branded Dodge Journey has been cancelled to free resources. The American group wants its engineers to focus on the future compact model developed in collaboration with Nissan and expected to be launched in 2010.

The forthcoming lineup looks rather empty in terms of new models and dealers will have to be patient until 2010 when the company unveils the redesigned 300 saloon, the Jeep Grand Cherokee in addition to the compact models. Future will tell if Chrysler took the right decisions.

Renault-Nissan won’t forge an alliance with Chrysler

Carlos_ghosn_koleos Despite rumours that promotes an alliance between Chrysler and Renault-Nissan, Carlos Ghosn said at the shareholder general assembly that troubled American carmaker isn’t interested in an alliance with Renault or Nissan.

"I don’t think the opportunity is there today," he said. "We are not in a hurry."

He also ruled out a future collaboration on purchasing, explaining that both carmakers would need common platforms. However, he said that Renault and Nissan were ready to sign more joint ventures and partnerships with Chrysler and other carmakers.

After GM and Chrysler which refused an alliance with Renault-Nissan, Ford is the last American carmaker available for an alliance. Last year, Bill Ford repeatedly said he wasn’t opposed to an alliance. A few days ago, Tracinda Corporation owned by Kirk Kerkorian bought a major stake in the carmaker. Kirk Kerkorian had pushed GM CEO, Rick Wagoner, to meet Carlos Ghosn for a potential alliance.

More details about Chrysler’s future midsize platform

Ch008_073se Chrysler is currently developing a new global platform destined for vehicles competing on the family car market segment.

The American carmaker has a team of 100 engineers working on the future platform which a top priority despite current restructuring. In an interview, Chrysler’s head of engineering for the project, Mark Chernoby, said that the platform was designed to be highly flexible as Chrysler wants to use it to build saloons and crossovers.

With this future platform, Chrysler hopes it will increase its global sales. The carmaker suffers from a low exposure on global markets and is too dependent on US economy. Last year 91% of its sales were realised in the US. What Chrysler needs is a global family car like the Opel/Vauxhall Insignia which will be sold in the US under the Saturn badge. Ford is also developing its own global platform for the next-generatino Mondeo after revealing the global Fiesta this year.

Chrysler to meet 2008 targets and denies talks with Fiat

Bob_nardelli The troubled Chrysler has announced it will meet this year’s target and denies being in talks with Fiat about potential partnership.

In an interview with Automotive News, Chrysler CEO Bob Nardelli said that the carmaker will meet the targets defined by its parent company, Cerberus Capital Management, despite a gloomy market. "Through the first quarter we are still on plan relative to the pro forma and the targets we established for 2008, in spite of some of the economic winds that are hitting us," said Nardelli (right on the picture) to Automotive News.

The CEO also denied the talks with Fiat revealed by the German newspaper, Handelsblatt. The newspaper cited the possibility for Chrysler to build Alfa Romeo models in its plants. It seems that the CEO wants to focus on the new partnership signed with Nissan. "What I really am pleased with is the quid pro quo, the ability to purchase and sell and try to balance manufacturing capacity engineering technology between our two companies. Our ability to meet the emerging market demand as quickly as we can would suggest we should look at partnerships, alliances … and that’s what we did,” said Nardelli.

  • Chrysler to build Alfa Romeos in the U.S. for Fiat?

Chrysler to build Alfa Romeos in the U.S. for Fiat?

Alfa_romeo_159 After BMW, Chrysler is cited as a future partner for Alfa Romeo to build the Italian marque’s models in the US.

Fiat and Chrysler have entered into talks about the possibility to build Alfa Romeo models destined for the American market in a Chrysler’s factory. According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, “Chrysler could produce the cars for Fiat subsidiary Alfa Romeo.” a Chrysler spokeswoman goes on record to say news of the talks are just speculation, adding "There could be other partnerships with other carmakers."

After the rumour linking BMW and Fiat, this potential partnership looks like to have better chance to get realized. Chrysler needs desperately to find new partners while Alfa Romeo needs a partner which doesn’t compete on the same market segments like BMW does.

This is not the first time that Chrysler and Alfa Romeo would work together. Fiat and Chrysler formed a distribution company in February 1989 to sell Alfa Romeo models in the US, but the American manufacturer sold its stake to Fiat in November 1991.

Last week Chrysler announced another partnership with Nissan.
