1997 Chrysler Viper GT2 racecar returns to Le Mans

Chrysler Viper GTSR chassis C3 LM24 1997It's back to the track of its glory days. During the 24 Hours of Le Mans of 1997, this very Chrysler Viper (yes, it was a Chrysler in Europe and a Dodge in the USA), was the only works car that finished the famous race. Driven by Justin Bell (GB), Pierre Yver (France) and John Morton (USA), chassis number C3 was defending the MOPAR colors in La Sarthe. It has now found a spot in the Le Mans 24 Hours museum. However, it will not rest still, as it is scheduled to run again on the big track during the coming Le Mans Classic!

Found in a barn in Iowa: NASCAR Dodge Charger with Petty chassis

    #28 rh side

From time to time, well preserved former NASCAR glories surface here and there. This one has a 1974 Dodge Charger body on a late 60s or very early 70s Petty chassis. It might have well been a Superbird, but only that car can tell!

    #28 sb engine
Where once a 426 HEMI bellowed, now a small block resides. This could indicate that it was raced upo until 1977, when the body was still elligible.

    #28 carburetor
It looks like the restrictor plate is still under the Holley carburetor. However, this Holley does not look like a Grand National piece, but more something from a late model.

    #28 dash lh
A peak of the interior, where you can see the typical Petty crossmember. It looks like the interior was red in its day.

    #28 dash
Pop riveted inside door panels could be a hint to the late sixties origin of this MOPAR.

    #28 driver pos
Three bar headrest: another hint to Petty Enterprise origin!

    #28 front end lh
The front of the chassis looks newer. The original was probably replaced after a crash.

    #28 front suspension
Drum brakes in the front indicate that it might have well been a super speedway car!

    #28 rear bumper
Now who had #28 in Grand National or Winston Cup or ARCA in 1977 ?

    #28 rear end cooler
The typical squirrel wheel cooler for the rear end or transmission.

  • Chrysler to reduce its SUV lineup

Chrysler to reduce its SUV lineup

Suv_chrysler_1 In an interview given to Bloomberg, Jim Press revealed that the carmaker needs fewer SUVs.

Chrysler president said that the company needs half of its 11 current SUV models. Three quarters of its American sales are generated by its SUV models and the carmaker wants to consolidate its brands to cut costs.

"We’re going to stop overlapping, we’re going to bring everything under one roof. By doing that we will have more products in the markets we are not covering,” Press said. "Our finances will have better quality.”

Chrysler has plans to reduce total models by almost a third, to about 19 from 28. The carmaker has already axed the Pacifica and PT Cruiser Convertible models.

    Spyshot: Dodge Breeze

Dodge_breeze_small Here are the first spyshots of the new Dodge Breeze expected to go on sale in Mexico next year.

The Dodge Breeze will spearhead the arrival of Chinese on the American continent as Chrysler plans to sell Chery models under the Dodge label in South America as a part of a deal due to be signed with the Chinese carmaker Chery. In order to bring the  car on the market as soon as possible, Chrysler seems not to have bothered giving the car a unique exterior styling. The Breeze will be a re-badged Chery A1 as American are used to doing it.

Dodge_breeze_big The Breeze was previously used for the Chrysler Stratus saloon sold under the badge Plymouth.

  • Dodge rolls off the 25,000th Viper

Dodge rolls off the 25,000th Viper

Viper89_2 The troubled Chrysler has rolled off its 25,000th Dodge Viper at its Conner Avenue Assembly factory.

The milestone might look like a bit small when Petrol-Head reports usual production milestones above one million units, but the Viper is a special vehicle sold at a high price.

The car was created on the idea of Bob Lutz and Caroll Shelby. Shown as a concept car, the car went on sale to spearhead a revival of the American carmaker. Unfortunately, the milestone won’t cheer the factory’s employees as Chrysler has announced it will close the Conner Avenue factory.

The current Dodge Viper will be built until 2011.

Chrysler to resume production at Illinois plant

    Patriot
After a five-day close due to a mechanical glitch, Chrysler will restart production at the Belvidere plant in the US. The plant builds the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot models.

The plant will cut out 1,000 jobs in March. Chrysler removed one shift as a result of poor sales and tougher times ahead for the American carmaker. Built in 1965, the Belvidere facility employs 3,400 people.

The factory was the production hub for the Dodge Neon sold on our shores under the Chrysler badge before building the current three models all based on the same platform.

Leaked pictures of the Dodge Challenger

    Dodgechallengerrear
Due to be officially unveiled at the next Chicago Motor Show, Leaked pictures of the Dodge Challenger are emerging on Internet. After the front fascia, the latest shots show the aft of the 2008 hottest car on the American market.

At first, the Challenger will be available in a single version, the SRT8 which will cost $37,995/£18,700. it will be powered by a 6.1-litre V8 HEMI whose exact spec remains secret. Rumours talked about a manual transmission, but the SRT8 will finally be equipped with an automatic gearbox. The SRT8 will be followed later by less powerful variants. The entry level will be powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine being hooked up to a four-speed automatic transmission. Between both extremes, the Challenger will have a R/T version which will feature a 5.7-litre petrol unit and a manual or automatic gearbox. It is also rumoured that a bigger engine with a displacement of 6.4-litre would be added on the SRT by 2010.

    Dodgechallengerfront
Only available with three colours, black, silver and orange, the SRT8 will also offers a limited number of options: summer tyres for £25, a multimedia system for £450 and an electric sunroof for £500.

    Dodgechallengerfront2
Thanks to a bold design, a well-thought car and a highly competitive price, Dodge appears to hold the aces and the first rush in December confirms that the Challenger might become the new Ford Mustang.
